Vazhakka - Cheru Payar Thoran (Banana - Green Moong)

Ingredients
  • Raw Banana - 1 big
  • Green Moong - 1/2 cup
  • Grated Coconut - 1 cup
  • Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Garlic - 4-5 petals
  • Coconut Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Mustard - 1/2 tsp
  • Green Chili - 1-2 nos:
  • Red Chili - 2 nos:
  • Curry Leaves - as required
  • Salt - as required
Preparation Method
  1. Wash and soak green moong for 3-4 hrs.
  2. Half cook the green moong and keep aside.
  3. Peel the outer skin of banana and cut into small pieces, wash clean and keep aside.
  4. Add grated coconut, cumin, ginger, garlic, green chili, turmeric powder to the chutney jar of the mixer, crush and keep aside.
  5. In a kadai / wok bring oil to heat and splutter mustard seeds.
  6. Bring down the flame to low and add red chili and curry leaves and saute.
  7. Add banana pieces, mix well and saute for 5mins: stirring continuously.
  8. Add half cooked green moong and cook for 2-3 mins:.
  9. Add coconut mix and mix well.
  10. Add salt and 1/2 cup water, mix well, close the lid and cook in low flame stirring in between.
  11. Sprinkle some more water if banana and green moong is not cooked well.
  12. Once everything got cooked, remove the lid and let excess water to get vaporize.
  13. The Kerala style 'Vazhakka-Cheru Payar Thoran' tastes well with steamed rice / rice soup.

Make a thick dough, adding lukewarm water little by little. Mix together jaggery, coconut, cumin powder, cardamon powder and keep aside. Bangalore, India to Dublin, Ireland amidst Covid-19

We, (myself, my husband, and our ten years old daughter), travelled from Bangalore to Dublin through Paris on 13th August 2020, as my husband got an employment offer from Ireland. We all were excited about the relocation but cautious. When our friends and relatives came to know that we travelled during the pandemic, many, who wanted to join their spouse or family abroad, but concerned about travelling with kids, started pinging us asking for the precautionary measures we took and the travel details. This is my humble attempt to write down the preparations for the travel and how we travelled.  Preparation       As soon as we came to know that we have to travel from Bangalore to Dublin any time in August, we started our planning.      We avoided going to any shops for purchase, in order to avoid the interaction with the public so that the risk can be reduced. Sooji Gothambu (Broken Wheat) Upma

Ingredients Broken Wheat - 1 cup Onion- 1 (chopped) Green Chili - 2 (chopped) Ginger - 1 piece (chopped) Carrot - 1 (chopped) Oil - 3-4 tbsp Curry Leaves - as required Red Chili - 1-2 nos: Salt   - as required Grated Coconut - as required (optional) Preparation Method Boil water in a deep pan, add broken wheat and a pinch of salt and cook till broken wheat is  cooked and become soft. Transfer the wheat to a strainer and allow excess water to strain. In a pan bring oil to heat, add chopped onion, carrot, green chili, ginger, red chili and curry leaves and saute till the onion becomes golden brown. Add cooked wheat, mix well. Add salt if required, close the lid and cook for 5mins:. Remove from flame, garnish with grated coconut and serve healthy breakfast.
